8 hours of Cannonsburg Race Report

Saturday, June 21 brought the 8 hours of Cannonsburg. 3 Founders riders, and one former Founders mate showed up to duke it out over the hilly tecky Cannonsburg Ski Area (A.K.A Farmersburg) for the 8 hour challenge. Steve Bartzen
and Shawn Davison teamed up to make a run at it while Sheri Versluis
and Niner rider Dan Jansen also formed a scary duo. Other local All-Stars, like Craig Geitzen, were present to add to the competition. The weather was perfect for the 8 hour jaunt through the 6 ish or so mile track.

Steve and Shari lead off the laps for there respective pairings. Steve hung on to second place behind Geitzen for the first two laps until the switch. On the forth lap Shawn D. caught Geitzen's partner and took back the lead for good. Shari and Dan sat patiently in third, waiting until the last lap to make there move to take home second place.

All in all it was a good day for the Founders squad. Steve and Shawn took home first place in the two man (15 laps) and winning the overall by 5 minutes over the first place four man team. Shari and Dan also walked with some sweet bowling jerseys, taking second (15 laps also) in the two man. Beers and good times were had by all at this fun local event. Thanks for reading.

Lumberjack 50.... I mean 100 Race report.

The first sign that this would be an interesting weekend came on the drive up to Manistee after work on Friday afternoon. A few days worth of really strong storms had washed out a section of US 31 south of town and knocked down trees over many other roads.

As I got near Big M there were quite a few houses with flooded yards and much of the area was without power.
Despite this there was no stopping the race from going forwa
rd. Luckily the terrain and abundant sand had drained pretty well, except for about a half mile or so section on a the lowest part of the course that was axle deep water which got deeper and muddier
as it was ridden in.
As expected the team put in a strong performance for the
race. Leading the effort and pushing the biggest gear of all the singlespeeds was the Farmer,

Nate Versluis. Nate Finished 3rd in the SS Class and 14th overall with a time of 8:17:36. Hard to imagine pushing one big gear around Big M for 100 miles. The next in at 9:06:11 good for 9th place singlespeed and 34th overall was Joe Kedrowski,

also one of the crazy singlespeeders. Joe was able to use his local knowledge to keep himself going at a steady and fast speed for the whole race. Also racing 14th place on a singlespeed and finishing with an impressive time of 9:06:11, placing 43rd overall was Tim Curtis.

Chip Richards was the next Founder's Racer in at 10:04:15, at 61st overall, putting in a good strong ride. Finishing next for the Founder's squad and setting a class course record in the process was the dynamic tandem duo of Captain Ken Blakey-Shell and Joe "Fro" Slonecki.

They were able to win their class handily with a time of 10:48:37. Finishing just behind the tandem was Ralf Scharnowski,

who is also a major sponsor of the Founder's team as one of the owners of Bargain Bookstores.com. Ralf finished in a time of 10:52:26, in 86th overall. After a major mechanical failure right at the start of the race, Shawn Davidson was able grind out the full 100 miles (last year earned him a trip to the hospital after 75 miles), finishing in 92nd overall with a time of 11:12:18. The Farmer's Wife, Shari Versluis,

was able to finish 10th in the women's class with a time of 11:49:10, pretty cool for a mother of 4. My race started out pretty well for the first lap of the race, but my lingering hip/back issues forced me to pull out after my second lap. Definitely a disappointment but something I'll be working to remedy for next year's race. Joining me in the DNF Guild for the race were Brad Bacon
and Dennis Murphy

, both of whom I'm sure will be back for the race next year.

Thanks to Rick and Founders Brewing Co for hosting an awesome event. We polished off 3.5 kegs of ale from the best brewery in America! (well number 7 to some)

Last but not least, thanks to his team of volunteers
for putting on a great event that we'll all be looking forward to next year. Check out the lumberjack100.com website for full results and many more pictures.

Thanks for reading
